Things to Carry in the Car When Driving in Winter

Driving in winters is not easy, but it can be simplified if you are well-prepared. As a general piece of advice, you must check the road conditions before heading out during winters if you live in cold or snowy regions. Here’s a list of things to carry in the car when driving in winter to ensure that you do not face any troubles while on the road.

  • A snow brush and an ice scraper
These are essentials to have in the car when driving in winters. The weatherman might not be 100% right, and flurries might make it difficult to drive your car in the snow. So, it is important to keep an ice scraper and a snow brush in the trunk during winters. Ice or snow on your car can be critical, as it might obstruct your view and increase the chances of a collision. So, get rid of ice or snow before you start driving to prevent any causalities.
  • Shovel
You can buy a collapsible or compact shovel and put it safely in the trunk of your car. If your car gets stuck during winters, a shovel will come in handy to clear the path in the snow.
  • Extra warm clothing
Now that you have the shovel and snow brush along with the ice scraper, you’ll use them when the need be. However, you’ll need additional layers of warm clothing and gloves while working in the snow with these tools. So, always carry an extra piece of gloves in the trunk. You’ll function better when you are warm and protected. Also, warm clothes also come in handy if you get stuck and need to wait until the roads are clear.
  • Blanket
If there’s an extra warm blanket at home, stack it in the car. Imagine a situation wherein you are stranded in your car, suffer a crash, or if the car wouldn’t start and there’s no help around? In such situations, you might have to sleep in your car for the night, and having a blanket would certainly be helpful.
  • Emergency reflectors or flares
Storms or snow can hamper visibility, so having reflectors are another important thing to carry in the car when driving in winter.
  • Kitty litter, sand, or rock salt
When you’re stuck in ice, you need some coarse materials to help the tires regain traction. Kitty litter, sand, or rock salt can come in handy at such times. You can rub it in the path of the car to help get it out of the slippery roads with ease.
  • Chain or rope
Another important thing to carry in the car when driving in winter is a chain or a rope to help you get out of the snow if you get stuck.
